Last week the world lost a teen idol. Davy Jones. He was a Monkee. That is Monkee, not monkey for you young ones out there. The Monkees were formed in the mid 1960's as America's and TVs answer to The Beatles. (If I have to tell you who they were please read no further I simply have no time for you.) The Monkees were the first "boy band" and Davy was the heart throb. There was Davy the sweet, cute, heart throb, Micky the funny one, Peter the flower child and Mike the quiet one. I of course am not one to fall for sweet and cute so I was a Micky girl...but that is neither here nor there.
Davy died of a heart attack last week at the age of 66. When talking about this the media, and friends of mine, comment that he was too young. While I heartily agree with this statement it got me to thinking when did 66 years old became young? Don't get me wrong I am delighted!! Betty White makes even 90 look young so 66 being young is a delightful thing to ponder. Being a woman of an nondescript age means that the future looks young and bright!
In 1966 when the Monkees were formed I was...lets just say a pre teen and let it go at that. Back then no one trusted anyone over 30. Back then senior citizen was 65+ If a women was pregnant at 40 it was a scandal. Look at us now. Lots of woman typically put off having children until they are older. You get your AARP card at age 50 and 66 is widely considered to be young by a majority of the people. That is nice.
But somewhere inside of me my childhood is shedding tears for the innocence that was my life way back when I had pictures of The Monkees all over my bedroom. It was a simple time and the best part was the 2 nights a week when I could sit down and hear Hey Hey We're the Monkees....life was good...and I was young....but luckily I still am! RIP dear Davy Jones.
